Reviews

The title suggests that this book is a divertimento, a term that describes a musical genre that is lighthearted; and yes, these poems have a lightness to them, but upon careful reading, they have an emotional intensity that belies the playful language with which most of hte poems are written. These poems’ dream-like quality evokes a sense of uncertainty and sorrow. Grapes embraces all of it in order to connect with oneself and with others. Connection is not only life-affirming, it makes one feel alive. Poetry contains the wound, and the wound contains poetry; both result in compassion. So how can a book that sounds the refrain of sorrow and despair make us smile? Because the book is full of gratitude and joy. Sorrow may be the glue that binds us all, but Art rescues us from despair because art leads to the shared experience of life itself.
